Ulster Final refixed for Sunday

The Slaughtneil season started in Portlaoise in February with an All-Ireland Semi Final win over Austin Stacks in the All-Ireland Club semi-final.  It was the beginning of an eventful and successful year that bought them notable success, including the Derry senior Camogie, Hurling and Football treble.

On Sunday past the minors hurlers were due to play the club’s 196th game of the season against Dunloy in the Ulster Minor Final but it fell victim to the wintry conditions. As expected Ballinascreen have refixed the game for 1pm this Sunday (20th December) so the competition and Slaughtneil's season will be finished in time for Christmas.
Slaughtneil had won the title on three previous occasions and are the holders of the competition with Dunloy going for their first title.

Saturday night was also a huge occasion for the Dunloy Cuchullains club who had hurling legend Henry Shefflin at their annual dinner dance.  Guests of honour were the members of the 1990 senior hurling squad who won the club’s first ever hurling championship twenty five years ago.

It was an eventful week for four of Dunloy's current crop - Ryan and Ciarán Elliot, Eoin O’Neill and Conal  Doherty-Cunning who picked up Ulster Colleges All-Stars along with Slaughtneil player Keelan Feeney.

This current Dunloy squad are in some quarters seen as winning the minor championship 'a year early' with a lot of the personnel eligible again next year.  This is a contrast to Slaughtneil who virtually the same team that won Ulster last year, with Paul McNeill, Oisin Glass and Cormac O'Doherty the only players who have moved on.

Goalkeeper Ryan Elliott comes from good stock, with this father Shane being en ever present between the posts for years with both Dunloy and Antrim.  In attack they have skill, pace and energy in the form of Doherty-Cunning, Keelan Molloy, Seaan and Ciaran Elliott.

Slaughtneil goalkeeper Francis McEldowney missed the semi final with an ankle injury and is unlikely to feature this time either with Morgan McEldowney set to retain his spot.  In defence Ciaran McGuigan, Mark Glass, Keelan Feeney were immense against Balygalget.  At midfield Conor McAllister and captain Proinsias Burke are the duo.  In attack Slaughtneil's scoring threat comes mainly from Shane McGuigan and Brian Cassidy, both who played in the Ulster Senior Final against Cushendall.

Both teams met in the Antrim league during the summer with Slaughtneil coming out on top and when St Louis met Maghera in the Mageean it was the Dunloy contingent that came through the battle.  On Sunday with an Ulster title up for grabs it's all to play for.  Will it be Dunloy's first title or number four for Slaughtneil?  We'll know more around 2.15 on Sunday.

Sunday 20th December
Dunloy v Slaughtneil (1pm at Ballinascreen)
