There will be bigger days ahead with more to play for but Damian Barton's first game as Derry manager saw them beaten by Tyrone (1-18 to 0-10) on Sunday in Crossmaglen.
Ever the competitor in his playing days, Barton would have been relishing this challenge but it was Mickey Harte's men who progress to the next round.
Reports suggest Derry started the game well but as the game progressed Tyrone came into the game and were convincing winners.
Derry's next outing is a home game against Antrim in the McKenna Cup in January.
