Carn Wheelers host Ulster Cyclo-cross


Junior Men's Winners

Local and progressive cycling club Carn Wheelers hosted the Ulster Cyclo-cross championships at the site of the former Maghera High School on Sunday.

Like many parts of the country, South Derry has really embraced cycling and it has become a hugely popular sport.

Local rider Marc Heaney picked up the silver medal for the Junior men's race behind winner Adam Duff, with Calvin Moore finishing in third place.





In the off season cyclists use cyclo-cross to keep their fitness levels topped up, it improves their bike handling and it also gives them a bit of variation to their training programmes.  However, you need to have a hose at the ready as it is  a messy sport.


Photographer Mark Doherty has been taking photos throughout Slaughtneil's past few seasons on the GAA pitch but he has diversified into cycling.  Here are a few of his photos on the gallery below.
